When I Grow Up, I Want to Be a Voter

excerpt from CityBeat, 8 November 2004

Treating voting as a civic duty hasn't worked. Despite all the lectures in high school, the public service ads on TV and appeals by popular musicians, barely half of eligible voters cast a ballot. Heather Sturgill of Northside has a better idea: treat voting as a cause for celebration. She admits she stole the idea from a friend, but she's making up for it by organizing "Northside Celebrates Voting." Think of it as a political party -- the kind with music, decorations and food -- on Election Day.

Voting as Cause for Celebration?

One community thinks so.

On Election Day, Northside will openly celebrate a privilege that many around the world do not have: Voting.

The merriment begins at Noon on November 2nd in a big tent on the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Lingo St. in the heart of the Northside business district. Sponsors include Heidelberg Distributors, Health Alliance and Cinergy Foundation.

Northside Celebrates Voting organizers feel Election Day should be festive. The celebration will include music, banners, streamers, food and drink. Ten bands will play between Noon and 10 pm, and area comedians will also entertain. Northside businesses have agreed to decorate with red-white-and-blue, and a huge banner across Hamilton Avenue will declare "Northside Celebrates Voting." Several Northside clubs, pubs and restaurants will stay open late (or open early) to serve celebrants.

The Northside community welcomes this new event. At least 46 Northside businesses have promised to participate.

Another facet of the celebration is "Voter Trivia." Participating businesses will offer discounts and raffle entries as rewards for correct answers to election-related questions.

Organizers and sponsors encourage everyone to vote, then celebrate in Northside.

Diverse Music for a Diverse Neighborhood

After the votes are counted, some will sound the trumpets of victory, and others will sing the Blues. But on Election Day, the entire Northside neighborhood will celebrate voting, and music will fill the air.

Unarguably, the community of Northside is one of the most diverse in Cincinnati. Nestled in the northwest cradle of I-75 and I-74, this unique neighborhood has 300,000 dollar houses beside low income apartments. The residents are engineers and truck drivers, clerks and professors, fast food workers and corporate executives.

In keeping with the neighborhood's famous diversity, it wouldn't be a Northside party without a broad spectrum of music. Northside Celebrates Voting will include Blues, Classic Rock, Celtic, Hip-Hop, Alternative, Folk, Pop and Reggae.

Festivities will begin Election Day at Noon in a big tent on the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Lingo St. in the heart of the Northside business district.

Even after the party ends officially, establishments like Boswell Alley, Bullfishes, Northside Tavern, Jacob's, and Preacher's will continue the celebration into the night with help from several of the bands featured during the day.

Sponsors Heidelberg Distributors, Health Alliance and Cinergy Foundation encourage everyone to come out and enjoy this musical smorgasbord.
